Abstract

*Counter-Texts* is a critical reassessment of artworks that use inscribed language, with a particular focus on works that challenge dominant narratives or which reveal, in visual form, the varied systems of oppression contained within words. Featuring more than forty artists from diverse backgrounds, ranging from Abbas Akhavan, Marianne Nicolson, Theresa Hak Kyung Cha and David Wojnarowicz to Glenn Ligon, Brian Jungen and Tony Cokes, Kim Dhillon rewrites the understanding of text in contemporary visual art. Examining how and why visual artists use written language, she interrogates the power held in words.
